2-7 December 2011
I have been very kindly invited by Craftspace to participate in the Craftspace Collective six day intervention at the Clothes Show Live. Each day a different artist has been asked to run workshops with the Collective and the public, to create an evolving installation, addressing the theme of ‘consumers being socially responsible.‘
I collaborated on an idea, ‘Caught in the web: A Deconstructed Structure’. On day one Emrys Plant of Block Colour, started things off using old clothes to create a web structure.
Emrys says-
On day one we aim to create a physical web within the Craftspace stand that will give the opportunity to other artists, makers and the public to respond to interconnected issues under the socially responsible umbrella as well as being a visually poetic installation. Using part deconstructed garments e.g. knitwear that has been pulled back to its constituent parts, the odd sleeve, collar, label or cuff will be left as a reminder of what was once a sum of its parts. The webbed strands will create tunnels and walls for other artists to work within.
I am going in tomorrow to bookend our idea. I hope to use deconstructed old clothes to create patchwork rope, that will continue to build the network within the space. I have chosen not to use the materials budget to use what is left from the previous days. I would also like to lead the workshop to create something that is strong, continuous and can be removed and reused when the intervention is over. The idea has been evolving as the days went by and I followed the documentation of the stand online via blogs. But this could change again, as I am trying to be led only by the needs of the space and how to visually complete the network.
